RCMP have now been called out to an on-going blockade on the Morice Forest Service Road as conflicts continue between Gidimt’en land defenders and Coastal GasLink.
On Sunday, some members of the Gidimt’en clan of the Wet’suwet’en issued CGL employees near the Wedzin Kwa an eviction notice, after which the new blockades were set up.
CGL, the Elected Council of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation, and BC’s Safety Minister have all condemned the blockades as dangerous in recent days.
According to them, more than 500 workers, some of whom are Wet’suwet’en themselves, are trapped at camps beyond the blockades with limited access to supplies.
Now, despite hoping the situation could be resolved without their intervention, the RCMP have mobilized their officers for what they are calling a “rescue mission”.
For Houston area residents, that means: a drastic increase in police presence, a new access point set up at the 27.5 km mark of the Morice Forest Service Road, and limitations to vehicle access.
The Gidimt’en say that they will continue to fight to have their hereditary rights recognized, while the RCMP look to enforce a Court-ordered Injunction for CGL’s work to continue.
