During their regular meeting tonight, trustees from Coast Mountains School District reviewed a letter regarding a racist incident at a Kitimat school.
Earlier in the month, a young Haisla student at Mount Elizabeth Secondary School was mocked by a teacher for wearing his traditional regalia to picture day.
Penned by the First Nations Leadership Council, the letter pointed out that similar incidents of racism in schools are far more common among Indigenous students.
They have directed the First Nations Steering Committee to work with the Ministry on a comprehensive First Nations Anti-Racism Strategy.
In addition, they have echoed previous suggestions of an In Plain Sight report conducted by an independent advisor.
But, the letter also asked the Board what steps the District plans to take to address the initial matter at Mount Elizabeth.
Those hoping for an update or input left disappointed, however, as none of the Trustees gave any comment on the matter.
But, the Board did decide to send the letter to the Haisla Nation to work on a joint response.
