A routine fisheries inspection conducted four years ago has led to nearly 90 thousand dollars in fines for one man.
Garry Dean Stoner pled guilty to 12 fisheries act violations spread across 3 separate incidents in the waters near Haida Gwaii.
In September of 2017, an inspection of his vessel, the Prestige II, revealed that Stoner had failed to submit a single Coho or Chinook salmon head across three landings, overfished his Chinook quota, retained prohibited fish, and more.
Further inspections the next year brought forward more allegations of non-compliance on two occasions.
Stoner has been charged a total of 88,644 dollars in fines, and has been given an 18 month ban on commercial salmon fishing.
Of the fine, just over 42 thousand was for the violations, while 44 thousand will go to recovering revenue obtained through the sales of illegally caught salmon.
