BC is introducing changes to the types of care that emergency responders are allowed to provide.
First responders will be able to provide additional diagnostic testing to better inform paramedics, administer epi-pens in the case of life-threatening allergic reactions, and support paramedics in preparing patients for transport.
For paramedics, the changes mean they will be able to provide life support or sustain medication during transport, use needle decompression to support breathing, use portable ultrasound equipment, and more.
As they implement the changes, the province will be working closely with emergency agencies to ensure oversight, licensing, and adequate training.
In addition, the province will be increasing wellness support and resources for front-line workers.
The changes come from recommendations made by the Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board, and were developed with input from a number of first responder agencies.
