For the first time in its history, the BC NDP have elected an Indigenous person to be their new President.
Aaron Sumexheltza (Shoo-muh-hetsa), a former elected Chief for the Lower Nicola Indian Band, has been selected as the provincial party’s next president.
A member of the NDP since 2013, Sumexheltza ran as the party’s candidate in the Fraser-Nicola riding last year.
As President, he will be tasked with managing the day-to-day activities of the party, dealing with membership, and developing fundraising strategies, among other tasks.
The role of President is not to be confused with Party Leader, a title which Premier John Horgan still holds.
