An upcoming Métis Nation of BC Culture and Language Centre now has a name.
After lengthy discussions, the Nation has decided to name its planned made-in-BC facility after Amelia Douglas.
Amelia was chosen due to her intense connection to Métis culture in an era where it was neither safe, nor popular to identify as Métis or Indigenous in general.
In addition, her story of migrating west to Fort St James from the Métis homelands, now known as Manitoba, while holding tight her cultural roots, is one of the most familiar and relateable Métis stories.
Earlier this year, the MNBC donated 100 thousand dollars towards an initial business and feasibility study for the institute.
MNBC has and continues to engage with Métis citizens regarding their priorities for the Amelia Douglas Institute.
