Ottawa is reportedly setting aside 40 billion dollars to compensate Indigenous Children after a lengthy series of court battles.
According to reports from Ottawa, the Federal Government is planning to announce the funding today, a day ahead of their fall economic statement.
Initially, a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal had ordered Ottawa to pay 40 thousand in compensation to all children who suffered under the on-reserve child welfare system since 2006.
It also ordered them responsible for equal payments to children denied Jordan’s Principle coverage between 2007 and 2017.
In October, the Liberals announced they would continue to appeal the decision, before pausing litigation to work on an out-of-court settlement.
They had set a deadline of December 31st to come to a settlement agreement.
While the announcement of the funding allocation is expected to come this afternoon, it does not mean that a settlement has been reached.
