A new conservation area is coming to BC after a rare donation of land by a Central Coast couple.
Now called the Snowshoe Creek Conservation Area, the 122 hectare parcel of land in the Bella Coola Valley was donated by Harvey and Carol Thommasen.
The Thommasen’s originally purchased the land three years ago with the goal of turning it in to a bird sanctuary.
But, along with the birds, the stretch of Rainforest is also inhabited by slews of grizzly bears, trout, salmon, and more than a dozen species listed under the Species at Risk Act.
Becoming a conservation area will also help to secure the corridor as a key travel path for wildlife in the Valley.
The Thommasen’s donated the land to the Nature Conservacy of Canada, with the support of the Nuxalk First Nation.
