A flood evacuation alert has been issued for multiple areas in Smithers, due to an ice jam on the Bulkley River.
An evacuation alert is a step below an order, and is intended to notify residents so they can prepare in case an order is issued.
The alert covers the Ebenezer Flats area, from Viewmount Road North along the southside of Kidd Road until it ends, and south along Viewmount to the Bulkley River.
That includes all properties on Columbia Street, 22nd Avenue, and Bulkley Street.
In addition, both the 2100 block of Riverside Drive, and the 2100 block of Main Street are covered under an alert issued by the Town of Smithers.
On December 25th, the 2700 block of Pacific Avenue, or the Fair Grounds, were added to the Town’s evacuation area.
Residents should set up a safe meeting place with loved ones, prepare essential medicines and documents for quick departure, move pets and livestock to safe areas, and arrange transportation and accommodation.
In addition, everyone is advised to avoid low-lying areas around the River, due to the constantly shifting conditions and risk of flooding.
