A study that was funded by Canada’s Justice Department has found out that many immigrants currently in BC do not find challenging the discrimination they face in legal situations worth the effort.
One of the study’s researchers found that the immigrants facing such discrimination that she spoke to were a mix of people just getting to Canada and some people that had already been well acquainted to Canada. And most of the interviewees at least had a Bachelor’s degree.
Most of the discrimination mentioned by the interviewees had something to with either employment or housing.
Some other big issues that were discussed included the difficulty of getting access to child tax benefits, Insurance and government services with even some of the immigrants saying that they had been defrauded.
In total, the report found 42 different legal issues that the 20 interviewees had been dealing with.
The report’s information was gathered between July and November of 2020 but it was only released over the past few weeks so the report would not be generalized to the larger portion of Canada’s immigrant population.
