More Indigenous language and culture inspired street names could be on the way in Terrace.
Weeks ago, Councillor Dave Gordon brought forward the idea of adding a consideration for Sm’algyax names to the City’s street naming bylaw.
At yesterday;s regular meeting, he officially put forward a motion directing staff to look in to changing the bylaw.
His proposal will see the City add lines to the bylaw for consideration and prioritization of Indigenous names and culturally significant figures beyond colonialism.
Expanding on this, Councillor Bujtas put forward a formal notice requesting staff to look in to adding Sm’algyax translations to public building signs.
Councillor Downie proposed the possibility of adding translations to existing street names as alternate names as well.
