An amendment to clarify the allowable fence height in the City of Terrace’s bylaws spurred unexpected debate last night.
In an effort to align the City’s bylaws with their community plan and downtown design guidelines, staff proposed the changes at last night’s regular meeting.
Those changes would see the maximum allowable height of exterior side yard fences drop from 1.85 metres to 1.2 metres.
The amendments would lower the allowable height for side yard fences which border roadways, but keep limitations at 1.85 metres for those which border neighbouring properties.
Said proposal did not sit well with numerous councillors concerned over limitations to the security of downtown properties.
They also brought forward concerns regarding the large number of variances that would have to be issued due to existing fences.
Ultimately, the bylaw received 1st and 2nd readings in order to send it to a public hearing, which will be scheduled in the future.
