Members of the Tŝilhqot’in Nation are calling for Ottawa to establish an independent review of the Pacific Salmon Treaty.
That request comes following a new report by the Watershed Watch Salmon Society and SkeenaWild regarding Alaska’s interception of Canada-bound fish.
Data from that report found Alaskan commercial fisheries had harvested hundreds of thousands of fish, of varies species, bound for Canadian waters.
This while historically low salmon returns in BC led to conservation measures and restrictions being put in place.
The Tŝilhqot’in Nation says these measures have resulted in substantial economic, lifestyle, and cultural sacrifices.
Now they are calling for a review of the Pacific Salmon Treaty with Tŝilhqot’in representation, and for a renegotiation of the deal with the US.
