A new grant application, which received District approval yesterday, may help provide the funds to upgrade Kitimat’s water system.
Kitimat’s current water system does not meet current water quality standards, and has the frequency of advisories trending up.
In order to modernize the system, the District has already set aside 2.2 million dollars in funding over the next two years.
But estimated project costs currently sit at 8.25 million, which includes a 30 percent contingency to account for inflation.
The province’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s Environmental Quality stream provides up to 73.3 percent of a project’s total cost.
Council voted during last night’s regular meeting to apply, with City staff confident in the application’s chances of getting approval.
