Thousands of Residential School records are set to be released as part of a new Memorandum of Agreement signed today.
On December 10th, Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller committed to handing over missing school narratives within 30 to 45 days.
Today, Miller signed a Memorandum of Agreement alongside National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation Executive Director Stephanie Scott.
That agreement will see 11 previously unreleased school narratives transferred to the NCTR in the next 6 months.
In addition, Ottawa is committing to transmitting legible versions of documents which had been corrupted during electronic conversion, and updated versions of previously released documents.
The new agreement will outline a list of priority documents, and develop a timeline for when they will be shared, starting with the transfer of those which had been previously unshared.
To date, the NCTR holds over 7,000 school narratives, and more than 5 million records.
Some documents remain under absolute confidentiality and require the waiver of the survivor in question to release.
