The RCMP has begun warning residents about a new scam that currently making the rounds known as the “bail money scam” where it begins with a conversation on the phone and ends with the scammers coming to their victim’s homes to collect money from them.
According to the Police, these scams usually start with a scammer calling someone while impersonating either a lawyer, a police officer or a relative and then saying that they need thousands of dollars in order to get one of the victim’s loved ones out of jail.
The scammer may also say that this call is the one designated phone call allowed from jail and that the call in question is confidential.
After the call, the scammer may go the victim’s house themself to pick up the designated amount of cash or they will send a courier.
The RCMP stated that the best way to handle one of these calls is to not give out any personal information, hang up on the scammer and then report the call to your local police.
