A decision on whether or not to keep a Prince Rupert School District trustee seat open for Indigenous representation only, has been tabled for now.
On December 16th, the BC Teachers’ Federation sent out a letter asking all Boards to work to create a designated Indigenous trustee seat.
During their regular meeting last week, School District 52’s current trustees held a lengthy discussion on the topic.
While most were in agreement that the Board needs more Indigenous representation, some disagreed that this was how to get it.
Trustee Tina Last said that she is in favour of increasing Indigenous participation, but not through an election.
Last says that an election is democracy at its fullest and shouldn’t be tampered with.
Meanwhile, Trustee Louisa Sanchez pointed out that around 60 percent of the District’s students are Indigenous, and that having an Indigenous trustee could bring cultural awareness to the Board.
Ultimately, the decision was tabled for a future meeting.
