Prince Rupert City Council made some decisions last night when it comes to how they will be determining the construction of the city’s new police station.
During yesterday’s regular council meeting, Prince Rupert council were presented with two choices on how they could adopt the loan for the city’s future Police detachment.
The city could either hold a referendum, where Prince Rupert’s citizens would vote like a municipal election on whether or not they wanted the city to borrow funds for the project.
Or the city could choose the alternate approval process, where the city would let the public know that they are going to borrow the 25 million dollars they need for the project and then give the citizens 30 days to let the city know if they were opposed to it.
A majority of the councilors let it be known that they were in favor of the alternate approval process with all citing that this station does need to be built but they also noted that it is worth asking the citizens if they want to the city to borrow 25 million dollars for the project while keeping control of where and how it’s built or give control to someone else and potentially have to pay more for the project.
The council decided to approve the alternate process and will begin their public awareness campaign soon.
