It’s looking like municipal signs and buildings in Terrace may soon begin to display the Sm’algyax (Suh-mal-yak) language.
During yesterday’s regular meeting, Councillor Butjas put forward a motion to have staff look in to adding the language to official signage.
That includes city infrastructure such as City Hall, public buildings, and especially welcome to Terrace signs.
During a meeting late last year, a motion was put forward and adopted to give consideration to Sm’algyax and Indigenous place names when naming streets.
That meeting also saw a mention of signs sharing that consideration, but it was not officially put forward.
City staff will now look in to the logistics of altering signage and other requirements, and report back to Council at a future meeting.
