An extensive CityWest project reached a significant milestone this past week.
The first 50 km of subsea fibre-optic cable for the Connected Coast project has been laid at the shore landings of three Northern BC communities, including: Lax Kw’alaams, Dodge Cove and Metlakatla.
Additionally, cable was also installed at an industrial site just outside Prince Rupert, as well as off the shore of Ridley Island.
Eventually the cables will be part of a 3,400 km subsea fibre cable running from Vancouver Island to Haida Gwaii, which will connect to the main network.
Once completed, the project will provide improved connectivity to 139 rural and Indigenous communities along the coast.
This project has been made possible thanks to a joint partnership between CityWest and the Strathcona Regional District along with funding from both the provincial and federal government.
