Earlier this week, the Williams Lake First Nation announced the findings of 93 potential remains of former students under the site of the former St Joseph’s Mission Residential School.
Under the guidance of Elders and knowledge keepers, the Nation will be hosting ‘Path to Healing’ gatherings in an effort to support survivors and their families.
In addition, the Nation also plans to host a future Spirit Walk to commemorate survivors, as well as those who did not return home.
In support of these efforts, Ottawa is providing just under 388,000 dollars to assist the Nation in their work.
A portion of the funding will also go towards building a monument in memory of Duncan Sticks, an 8 year-old who was found frozen to death in an attempt to return to Esk’etemc territory after escaping the Mission.
The Nation is also continuing to work with the Cariboo Chilcotin Teachers Association on ways to share culture, traditions, and experiences with staff and students.
