Today marks the one year anniversary of the fatal sinking of a tugboat south of Kitimat, and few questions have been answered.
Sometime in the early morning of February 11th, 2021, the tugboat Ingenika sank near the Gardner Canal.
Intitially, crew member Troy Pearson, had refused to leave port in Kitimat, but he was eventually convinced to by management.
It departed in the late hours of February 10th, but in the face of extreme winds and temperatures, the Ingenika sank, claiming the lives of both Pearson, and Charley Cragg, who was on his first shift.
An investigation was launched by the RCMP and Transport Canada after an emergency beacon was detected in the canal.
But, to date, a report on the investigation has yet to be released.
Tugboat operators say this failure to report highlights the gaps in regulation, and safety, and are calling for stronger training and response.
