A Pilot program is being launched by Central Chilcotin Rehabilitation in order to re-seed forests in the Chilcotin Plateau with the help of drones.
With help from the Forest Enhancement Society of BC, the project will see around 52 hectares of forest devastated by the 2017 wildfire season re-seeded.
CCR’s president, Perry Guichon, explained just how much time could be saved when using these drones in tandem with regular planting methods.
These drones, provided by reforestation company DroneSeed, will carry seeds embedded in a small vessel along with soil and nutrients in order to help them grow.
In addition, more than 50,000 seedlings provided by CCR will be used for interplanting in other burned areas next year.
The Forest Enhancement Society even believes that this program could help deal with climate concerns.
As for exactly how much the program could help with the climate, Guichon said that they will wait to see what the summer brings in terms of how it affects the seeds.
Funding for the program was provided by the government of Canada.
CCR is a joint partnership between the Tl’etinqox and Tsi Del Del First Nations.
