Update (02/18):
In a release from this afternoon, CGL revealed that nine members of their nightshift crew were victims of the alleged attack.
They also say that the perpetrators commandeered equipment on site and used it to damage other heavy equipment.
Photo evidence and available surveillance footage have been submitted to RCMP, though according to CGL, part of the coordinated attack involved disabling lighting and video surveillance.
Two of the photos submitted as evidence were also posted in the CGL release, and can be seen below.
Original Story:
RCMP are investigating an attack on a worksite near Houston which was allegedly carried out by as many as 20 individuals.
Early this morning, police were called out to Marten Forest Service Road after reports of an attack on Coastal GasLink workers.
Those reports alleged that 20 camouflaged individuals, some armed with axes, were attacking security guards and smashing vehicle windows at the site.
CGL says that some of the individuals attempted to set a vehicle on fire while workers were inside, and some were temporarily trapped at the site, though all managed to escape unharmed.
When police attended, they found the roadway had been blocked by downed trees covered in tar, wire, and spiked board.
They say fire had been lit inside the debris, and as police worked their way through, smoke bombs and fire-lit sticks were thrown at them.
Further down the road, they found a school bus blocking the road, but were able to clear it and move past without incident.
When police arrived at the drill pad, they found significant damage to equipment, but did not locate anyone at the site.
CGL says the damage caused to the equipment is in the multi-millions.
They also say hydraulic and fuel lines were caught, causing possible environmental damage still being evaluated.
Word of the incident spread quickly last night, and politicians from all levels, including Premier John Horgan, have issued statements condemning the alleged attack.
Police are continuing to investigate, and anyone with information is asked to contact Houston RCMP at 250 845 2204.
