A pair of NDP MPs have penned a letter calling for the Liberal government to take action against Alaskan interception of BC bound fish.
Skeena- Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach, and fisheries critic Lisa Marie Barron penned the letter, sent out on Tuesday.
It references a report released last month by SkeenaWild and the Watershed Watch Salmon Society, which highlighted the issue.
That report found that Alaskan fisheries had intercepted more than 800,000 BC-bound Sockeye salmon last year alone.
Meanwhile, Canadian commercial fisheries were hit with wide closures, while First Nations had their rights to fish restricted.
This week, Liberal representatives are attending the annual meeting of the Pacific Salmon Commission, who oversee the Treaty which guides the parition of fish between the two countries.
Bachrach and Barron are calling for them to begin restructuring the Pacific Salmon Treaty, which is not scheduled for renewal until 2028.
