Northern Health has issued a toxic drug alert for the Terrace area, after an increase in overdose events in the community.
According to reports, the substance to blame is a dark purple or blue chalky substance, being sold as down.
It is highly toxic, and causes heavy and prolonged sedation, and requires a larger amount of naloxone to reverse.
Overdoses are occurring when when the substance is injected or smoked.
Northern Health recommends that individuals not partake in drug use alone, know your current tolerance level before use, start with smaller amounts and go slow, do not mix drugs with alcohol or other drugs, and use an overdose prevention site if possible.
In Terrace, the Intensive Case Management Team runs an overdose prevention site at 4450 Greig Avenue, Unit 101, between noon and 4:00 on weekdays, excluding holidays.
