Terrace Deputy Fire Chief Dave Jephson says well trained staff members prevented a fire at Sonder House which saw one individual severely burned, from becoming even worse.
Fire crews were out conducting routine business when they were called to the blaze at the supportive housing facility at 4523 Olson Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.
When they arrived, they found that staff had already evacuated the building, after fire alarms sounded.
Upon hearing the alarm, one staff member entered the unit in which the fire was burning, and found an unconscious occupant.
They were able to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher just as crews were arriving on scene.
When they arrived, they helped remove the worker, who was suffering from smoke inhalation, and the victim, who was treated by fire crews until paramedics could arrive.
Suffering from severe burns, the victim was initially sent to Mills Memorial, before being quickly medavaced to a Vancouver burn unit on a plane redirected from the North.
According to Jephson, the victim suffered burns on over 40 percent of his body, and is in serious condition.
Jephson says the outstanding efforts and training of Sonder House staff, particularly the individual who extinguished the blaze, saved the victim’s life.
