Indigenous Services Canada have updated their School Space Accommodations Standards, giving First Nations greater flexibility to design and renovate schools.
Through the changes, co-developed with the Assembly of First Nations, students will have more space to practice and learn their culture.
Those new updates increase on-reserve school sizes, and add space to support full-day kindergarten, language and culture rooms, knowledge keeper offices, counselling rooms, and outdoor learning spaces.
While the Standards set guidelines for all school renovation projects funded by the ISC, they do not determine funding itself.
Existing funding procedures, such as the First Nations Infrastructure Investment Plan, will continue to be available and apply to major school projects.
Ottawa has committed 2.34 billion dollars through 2025 to improve First Nations schools, with 860 million from the 2021 Budget alone.
