More than 300,000 dollars has been allocated from the City of Terrace’s general surplus to develop a detailed landfill closure design.
Under their operating agreement, the City is required by Ministry of the Environment to close the old municipal landfill on Kalum Lake Road.
In November of last year, they committed to preparing an updated closure plan with a phased approach.
So far, activities have been performed on site to begin the construction of an interim treatment system, and environmental and water quality monitoring.
Now, city staff are requesting an additional 300,000 dollars, on top of the 200,000 already budgeted, to complete a detailed closure design.
In addition, the funding will also go towards developing an Environmental Effects Monitoring Plan, as well as a discharge limits proposal, both required by the Ministry.
Last month (February), the City submitted a request for 6.7 million dollars in grant funding for the landfill closure project.
However, that funding is for construction and not planning, and this new funding will not influence the status of that application.
