Urgent repairs to Terrace’s sewage treatment plant outfall pipe will cost the City just over 1.2 million dollars.
Last June, a high water event caused significant damage to the pipe’s protective plating, leaving 30 metres of exposed polyethylene pipe.
When originally installed more than two decades ago, the underwater pipe was weighed down by concrete ballasts, covered in a cement blanket, and burried under a heavy layer of river rock.
Now, the flood-damaged protective shielding will be replaced with pre-cast concrete blocks, each weighing 14,000 pounds, placed over the exposed pipe.
An application for grant funding which would cover up to 80 percent of the costs has been submitted to Emergency Management BC.
However, with the damage needing to be repaired this spring or risk further damage, the City cannot wait for approval.
EMBC funding can be retroactively applied, should the city acquire approval in the future.
