According to the City of Terrace, the BC Prosecution Service is failing to crack down on repeat offenders.
In a resolution sent to the North Central Local Government Association last week, the City calls the Service out for not living up to its own mission statement.
They say that communities such as Terrace are feeling the impacts of prolific offenders released without consequence to repeat their crimes.
Often times, they are released under the reasoning that punishing them would not be in the best public interest.
In the resolution, they call for the Association to lobby with the province to consider public safety and fairness when dealing with prolific offenders.
They are also calling for the development of guidelines to define what constitutes as public interest.
During the City’s last regular meeting, Councillor James Cordeiro announced his intention to bring forward a motion to look in to a no-go zone for the downtown as a condition for released offenders.
Last week, the RCMP released a notice of increased break and enters in the city’s downtown, which they largely attribute to a number of prolific offenders.
One such offender is still on the streets, despite numerous arrests, as RCMP await word from the Prosecution Service.
