Canada and the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation have reached an agreement to settle a grievance more than 100 years later.
In 1911, 22.5 acres of land was cut from Lake Cowichan Reserve 1 by Canada, and sold to what is now the Vancouver Island Railway.
In 2015, the Nation filed a Specific Claim, alleging the unlawful cut-off of the land from their territory.
Now, through dialogue and negotiation, the two parties have come to a settlement agreement to resolve the issue.
That agreement will see the Nation receive just under 3.5 million dollars in compensation.
A settlement agreement was initially ratified by the Nation last December.
