For the first time in quite a while, water rates could be taking a leap in the District of Kitimat.
During yesterday’s regular meeting, council agreed on the structure for the water rate bylaw, which will need to return to council for final adoption.
Under that structure, residential users would see the water rate jump by 13.9 percent, meaning an increase from 144 dollars annually, to 164.
For commercial and institutional users, however, the rate will vary thanks to an inverted model chosen by council last night.
Under that model, commercial and institutional water users will be charged more, depending on the amount of water used.
Those using less than 200,000 tonnes could actually see a rate drop, while those using more will see exponential increases in a tiered system.
Now, staff will draft an updated bylaw, before it comes back to council for review and approval.
