Investigations in to the 2014 Mount Polley Mine disaster have finally wrapped up.
In total, three engineers faced discipline, as well as $226,500 in fines and legal fee payments.
Stephen Rice, the more senior of the engineers, was fined $25,000, and agreed to pay a further $107,500 in legal fees.
Rice’s junior at the time, Laura Fidel, will face a two month suspension of her registration, as well as being ordered to complete three courses related to tailings management, facility design and operation, and geowaste facility engineering management.
Former engineer, Todd Martin, Mount Polley’s senior geotechnical engineer between 2011 and 2012, was also punished.
Martin has been ordered to pay $25,000 in fines, $69,000 in additional legal fees, and will have special conditions to follow, should he ever seek to re-up his license.
All three were found by the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC, to have committed numerous acts of unprofessional conduct, and failed to ensure sufficient observation, monitoring, and safety at the mine.
