A motion by City Council to look in to instituting a “no-go zone” for repeat offenders in downtown Terrace has been denied by RCMP.
The motion to restrict prolific offenders from entering the area was first put forward by Councillor James Cordeiro at a meeting earlier this month.
At a subsequent meeting, Council voted to send a resolution to the North Central Local Government Association, addressing the string of repeat offenders.
In that resolution, the City calls out the BC Prosecution Service for failing to crack down on repeat offenders, allowing them to continually be released without consequence.
But, interim RCMP detachment commander Mike Robinson denied the “no-go zone” idea, despite the rise in shoplifting and property crimes.
He says that it is not within the detachment’s power to enact, and disagreed with Cordeiro’s beliefs that it would be effective.
According to Robinson, a “red zone” enacted for certain areas in the 2000s was ineffective and led to heavy-handedness by RCMP, and cut residents off from areas they needed to get to.
Robinson says that RCMP can now only restrict people from entering areas where they have committed certain crimes.
