Premier John Horgan says that Federal plans to eliminate open-net pen salmon farming should come with a job transition plan.
Ottawa began phasing out the open-net pens on the west coast in 2020, and apparently plan to transition away from open-net farming by 2025.
But Horgan says that, should they go throw with that proposed plan, hundreds of jobs could be lost.
He is urging the Federal Government to promise that an appropriate workforce transition plan will be implemented for workers in the salmon farming industry.
In a letter sent to the Prime Minister, Horgan also notes that any plans to transition away from open-net pens must be developed alongside First Nations, and communities that rely on the farms.
According to the First Nations Wild Salmon Alliance, more than 100 First Nations are in support of Ottawa’s plan to phase out the open-net pens.
