Two northerners are among 31 British Columbians being honoured with the Medal of Good Citizenship.
This year’s honours were handed out to citizens who made outstanding contributions to the well-being of their communities during the pandemic.
While most of those honoured are from the south, Christopher Horner from Masset, and David Horton from Prince George represent the north.
Horner is the Elders Centre Coordinator with the Old Massett Village Council, and is being honoured largely for his work to promote food security.
As a leader of the greenhouse and community gardens programs, Horner helped provide 259 raised gardens to homes in Masset, Old Massett, and New Town.
When the pandemic hit, David Horton saw the need in his community for safe gatherings and events.
Over the course of the pandemic, Horton put on everything from regular drive-in movie and trivia nights, to weddings, funerals, birthday celebrations, and more.
His efforts raised more than $10,000 for charity and entertained more than 9,000 residents.
