Plans to relocate Prince Rupert’s Public Works operations are underway, with a new home now locked up.
Today, the City of Prince Rupert signed off on a 5-year lease for the vacant MacCarthy GM building, with an exclusive purchase option.
According to Mayor Lee Brain, the Chamberlin Avenue site presents a more efficient option for the city, as opposed to a fresh build.
He says the central location, large parking lot, and well-maintained infrastructure make it an ideal solution to the currently failing facility.
Last year, the city discovered a number of irreparable maintenance issues at the current Wantage Road Public Works Yard.
A number of upgrades will need to be made to the existing building, including: integrated office spaces, warehousing infrastructure, washroom and lunchroom renovations, and more.
In total, the project is anticipated to cost $750,000, covered by a dividend from the City’s wholly-owned development corporation: Prince Rupert Legacy Inc.
