Skeena- Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach is calling for the government to take action to improve rail safety.
While speaking in the House today, Bachrach, who is also NDP Transportation Critic, said the government’s hands-off approach to rail safety regulations is killing rail workers.
He called for the Liberal government to stand up to big rail companies, and protect workers’ lives.
Bachrach’s comments come following the release of a troubling report in to a 2019 CP Rail accident near Field, BC, which claimed the lives of three workers.
In their report the Transportation Safety Board says CP failed to listen to safety concerns continually raised by workers.
That report found that old brakes, combined with extreme colds, and inexperienced leadership were to blame for the accident.
But the TSB also says that, over the years, many reports regarding dangerous conditions on Field Hill were reported, to no avail.
Hazard reports submitted by workers about braking issues, such as the one that caused the deadly accident, went unaddressed by CP, without so much as a risk assessment.
