A dangerous impaired driver was arrested by Prince Rupert RCMP this weekend, but not before crashing in to a light post, and fleeing police on numerous occasions.
At 8:30 Sunday night, police received reports of a vehicle driving dangerously near the Port Edward turnoff.
According to reports, the driver had crashed in to and knocked over a light post, which fell to obstruct a traffic lane, before fleeing the scene.
Police then began conducting patrols, and soon observed a vehicle with bumper damage travelling well above the speed limit toward the highway from Port Edward.
When police attempted to pull the vehicle over, it sped away, swerving in to oncoming traffic to overpass vehicles.
Police determined it was not safe to pursue, but patrols were maintained and the stopped vehicle was located twice more, fleeing both times.
Eventually, the vehicle broke down across the Khyex River Bridge, and police were able to apprehend the 31 year-old driver.
He tested more than double the legal blood-alcohol limit, and was found to be a prohibited driver, with outstanding warrants from Terrace.
Police served the man, whose identity was not released, a violation ticket, and forwarded numerous charges to the Prosecution Service.
