After months of discussions, the 2022 Kitimat water rates bylaw has finally been adopted.
Under that bylaw, water rates will go up by 13.9 percent, which works out to a new annual rate of $164 for residential users.
That rate is not retroactive, however, meaning the new rate of $13.67 per month for residential users won’t take effect until May 1st.
Commercial and institutional water users will see their rates go up by the same percentage, though the exact rate varies.
With municipal treatment costs expected to increase in the near future, the idea of altering the rate structure for commercial users was debated over the course of the discussions.
Those discussions centred around the introduction of a flat rate, or tiered system of higher rates, based on the volume of water used.
However, council ultimately decided to revisit the rate structure in the future, after municipal costs increase.
