A low level water quality advisory has been issued by the Town of Smithers, due to elevated manganese levels.
An advisory is the lowest level of water quality statement, ranking below a boil water advisory.
Manganese levels in the Smithers water supply were measured at 0.18 mg/L, above Health Canada’s acceptable level of 0.12 mg/L, prompting the advisory.
While residents may notice a slight discolouration in their water, the effects are merely aesthetic to most adults.
However, residents are advised to not use the water to prepare formula for babies.
Northern Health is actively working with the Town to reduce the manganese levels in their water supply.
