Residential flat tax rates in the District of Kitimat are going up, but sticking around in 2022.
As part of yesterday’s regular meeting, council voted to raise the tax to $693 dollars for the year, a 3.75 percent increase over last year, in line with recent municipal tax adjustments.
However, the resolution also included an option to eliminate the flat tax in general, and shift to a fully variable system.
While the flat tax only makes up a portion of total property taxes, it allows the assessment dependent rate to remain lower, easing the load on owners of lower valued properties.
On top of the flat tax, this year’s municipal property taxes include a charge of $2.46 per $1,000 of assessed value, on top of the flat rate.
If the flat rate charge were to be eliminated, that rate would climb to $4.17 per $1,000.
Regardless, an additional provincial rate charge of $2.90 per $1,000 also applies.
