A new building bylaw has been adopted by the Town of Smithers, replacing an outdated version from 2011.
According to the Town, the new bylaw modernizes regulations amidst a period of rapid change in terms of laws, materials used, building methods, and energy standards.
Under the new bylaw, the Town will be able to refuse or revoke building permits, and double building permit fees to a maximum of $10,000 when construction begins before a permit is issued.
In addition, a security deposit will now be charged when submitting a new building permit application, and application fees for build permits, both residential and commercial, are now set at $75.
