An old secure storage locker has been discovered in the Northwest Territories which may hold additional Residential School records.
Previously held by a now-defunct third party organization funded by the Canadian Government, the documents are now in government possession.
According to Ottawa, the organization was a non-profit which provided health supports under the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement.
As the documents are confidential in nature, the government sought guidance from the courts supervising the Settlement Agreement.
Now the documents have been secured for review by the IRSSA Court Monitor, who will report findings to the courts and recommend next steps.
A separate set of documents from a second storage site in Vancouver have also been reviewed, and are believed to be duplicates.
Initial review determined those documents to be hard copies of information already shared with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
