Prince Rupert’s Seal Cove and Salt Marsh project is now open to the public, following a grand opening held on the weekend.
Undertaken by the Prince Rupert Port Authority, in partnership with the City, the project set out to reduce human impacts and restore natural ecosystems.
Restoration work focused on regrading intertidal areas and transplanting underwater vegetation to create new habitats for aquatic life.
Habitats for other wildlife, such as birds, were also created through the addition of shoreline vegetation, and the uncovering of a creek previously hidden in a culvert.
A lighted pathway encircling the Salt Marsh and linking to the Rushbrook Trail was also added for year-round use, along with a pedestrian bridge, benches, picnic tables, and seating areas.
In total, the Port Authority directly invested $4 million in the completion of the extensive restoration project.
