Prince Rupert fire crews were able to limit the damage of a dangerous structure fire from last night, but not before it claimed a landmark.
Just before 9:00 last night, fire crews were called out to a blaze at the Belmont Hotel on 3rd Avenue.
According to fire crews, the blaze had engulfed portions of the Hotel and the neighbouring Rose’s Oriental Food and Gift Shop prior to arrival.
But the Belmont ultimately took the most visible damage as crews battled the flames for 5 hours before getting them under control.
With the fire threatening to spread laterally through the adjoining buildings, crews transitioned to a defensive approach to try to stem the spread.
Most of the external damage was limited to the hotel, which was completely leveled, with Rose’s Shop also suffering heavy fire damage, though the Beer and Wine store was saved.
Fire crews are still on-site, with one apparatus and heavy equipment, to manage remaining hotspots.
No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Crews expect to remain on site through the morning.
