Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach was joined by NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh today to re-assert his proposal to lower Canada’s voting age.
Last December, Bachrach tabled a private members’ bill which would see the legal federal voting age dropped to 16.
Today, Singh joined Bachrach in asserting that 16 and 17 year olds should have a say in the future of the country.
Bachrach says that climate concerns and soaring housing costs have young Canadians concerned about how today’s political decisions will impact their future.
He says that 16 year-olds already bear responsibilities without representation, and that many are already working and paying taxes.
In total, 13 countries have dropped their voting age below 18, which has been found to increase voter turnout and drive political interest among young people.
