BC’s Attorney General, David Eby, is set to announce his plan to crack down on prolific offenders tomorrow.
Eby’s announcement comes after months of lobbying from municipalities across the province.
For the City of Terrace, the lobbying started in early March, with a resolution to the North Central Local Government Association.
That resolution called out the Prosecution Service’s lax, “catch-and-release” style of handling repeat offenders.
Later that month, they sent a delegation to Victoria to broach the topic with Eby personally, and came back pleased with the response.
They were joined on that trip by representatives from Williams Lake, and last week Quesnel got on board with their own meeting.
Those meetings brought forward a few suggestions: stricter bail conditions for prolific offenders, additional Crown prosecutors and lawyers, a specialized court which considers health and social services, added public safety officers, and more.
A letter bringing up the same concerns was also sent to Eby by the BC Urban Mayors’ Caucus, representing 13 municipalities, last month.
