Construction on a new commercial vehicle inspection station planned for the Terrace area is slated to begin this spring.
It will replace the former station at the intersection of Highways 16 and 37 which was decommissioned when the new roundabout was installed.
This new station will utilize Intelligent Transportation System technology, making it more efficient than the previous station, while also enhancing compliance.
Part of that system will include weigh-in-motion technology, which checks height and weight of vehicles registered with the province without the need to stop.
It will also introduce automatic identification, which will verify a vehicles credentials to allow it to bypass the station entirely if certain criteria are met.
Drivers will also benefit from additional parking stalls, toilets, rest areas, WiFi, and electrical outlets.
Funding for the project is joint, with the province providing $19.2 million, and Ottawa $15 million, with construction expected to be completed in late 2024.
